A Makeshift Prayer
I am being reborn a new man,
I have been working full-time days on who this new man should be, what he looks like, how he talks, maybe he's taller with less hair from the stress of the working, and from peeling away the old skin to be covered in a new coat; maybe he's longer in the tooth from the experience, but he's wiser for sure, because the school he's attending is called life, and to live in this world it takes courage and conviction that the old me didn't have and didn't miss, but that was ignorance and inherent unhappiness and lack of joy, lack of priceless things that add up to form a soul; and some used to say I'm an old soul, but what they were seeing was a man well versed in fear and pain, a seasoned actor who knows that to get along in life, you need to act happy, act interested, act committed, act loyal, act sexual, act with erudition, and what they saw in that old soul was the absence of one, but didn't have the heart to say it. I could be a great man if only I could discard my old self, cleanse myself in holy waters and be new, but therein lies the joke; the new me depends on the old mind, the old me, so I have no choice but to sew the two together, and the compilation of mes will be nothing short of astonishing. © 2014 Nicholas Emeigh |
