small, neat rectangles of land
like a perfect city quilt
black roofs blend together and under
lives start, plans plotted in small homes
timid first, constrained by brick
build and overflow onto
thin grey lines lead to centers
where green sprouts and music plays
the music is sometimes sad
the beat sometimes slows at night
but all these small rectangles
black roofs, thin lines, release their life
to begin adventures awe inspiring
and to look back on these objects
one would never know that flat
roofed rectangles are the hearts
of our city that keep streets flowing
