Respect For Elders
The world has gone and left behind
My simple antiquated mind, And here I sit moping around, A book needing to be rebound. Its contents are of importance, An old but firm and solid stance On what the world should strive to be, But now no one listens to me. Because the world has moved and changed, Things have been dusted, rearranged In rooms that used to feel like home Scholars' ghosts no longer roam. Left to die forgotten deaths, Sunken into deeper depths, As the unappreciative Trod on the innovative. The wisest man's philosophy Is passed along to you and me As common knowledge for the day, No respect paid to where he lay. With each enlightened step we take, With every wise choice that we make, We owe a debt to he who gave His life, so step around his grave. © 2014 Nicholas Emeigh |

Notes: This poem was written on Monday, April 14, 2014. It's about being an educated person looking at the new generation coming up having no idea about the history of the wisdom they consider common knowledge. What's worse, they don't care. So, this poem is about paying respect and learning that there's a debt to be paid to those who came before you who made your life a little easier.
