Noël Coward's Party
I shall tell you the tale of a party,
Though another man's told it before. I just understood partly that the fun there was hearty, And that all of them drank until airs in there sank, But the English was old and the message too bold For the language to make it a bore. You see, here's Mr. Coward Whose career has just flowered, Even now, just as then, amongst men who love men He brought ease to the eye, you can understand why, If you'd seen him back then armed with paper and pen His formidable wit made you cower. But back to this marvelous party, The story I started to tell, All the guests were dressed smartly, though some undressed partly, They all shouted and sang, a right jolly old gang, If invited for class, I'd be out on my ass, They all were just classy as hell. I was nicely surprised by this party, Whose attendees were all off the cuff, And although I'd expected I'd just be rejected, I downed the champagne with the likes of Elaine, Stritchy danced on the bar while she polished her star, And I loved it not having to bluff. And back now we go to Noël Coward Eying me from the foyer, He's ready to leave, cuff links back in his sleeves, And from way over there, I can tell by the stare I'm not sleeping alone, then I hear Stritchy groan, And say, "Get a pre nup and a lawyer!" I guess I should say more of the party, But I only saw Noël in the room, All the rest was a blur, and my Noël will concur It was love at first sight and all through the night. I awoke without Noël and an unresolved goal, My dream ends abruptly in gloom. So, I didn't attend any party, Noël and Stritchy have gone, They'd never been here, I am crazy I fear I concocted this scheme, and although just a dream, I wished it to be real, I'm entitled to feel, Long before dawn, the laughs and the songs, The wit and the wile, the jokes and the smiles, The pure validation, a lofty sensation, Oh, I wish I'd attended that party! © 2014 Nicholas Emeigh |

Notes: This poem was written on Monday, March, 17, 2014. It's about having a crush on the young Noël Coward, and the fantasy/dream of having been to his "Marvelous Party" with Elaine Stritch (Stritchy, as he used to call her). It's sort of a response to Noël's song "I've Been To A Marvelous Party."
